Fans of seminal playwright and Padua Hills Playwrights Festival founder Murray Mednick are in for a treat: Open Fist Theatre Company presents Mednick’s entire “The Gary Plays” series in one epic production. Originated by Padua Playwrights and developed in workshops over a two-year period by Open Fist, “The Gary Plays” chronicles the odyssey of unemployed actor Gary Bean, Mednick’s everyman/anti-hero who has been hailed by KCRW as “a sort of L.A. Leopold Bloom.” Audiences can choose to follow Gary’s journey over the course of three evenings — or view all six plays on a single Sunday.

Part 1: Tirade for Three & Girl on a Bed (2 hours with intermission)

In “Tirade for Three,” overwhelmed with grief and self-recrimination, Gary haunts the urban park where his son was recently murdered by an "unknown assassin." A pair of mysterious figures join him to review key moments in his life.  Gary is haunted by the memory of an encounter with a young woman his son knew in “Girl On A Bed.” Hoping for answers, Gary convenes a group of characters implicated in this bleak, hard-bitten strata of Los Angeles to investigate together the mystery of this woman.

Part 2: Gary’s Walk & Out of the Blue (2 hours and 15 minutes with intermission)
Retrieving his son’s ashes from his ex-wife in the San Fernando Valley, Gary embarks on a long odyssey walking the length of the LA River to scatter the ashes into the Pacific. En route with his inner voices, Gary encounters various people, including the angel of death. In “Out of the Blue,” Gary's mother has been placed on life support and she needs Gary to pull the plug. Her husband makes arrangements for Antonio to take Gary into the underworld to meet Danny's killer.

Part 3DaddyO Dies Well & Charles’ Story (2 ½  hours and with intermission)
Still haunted by ghosts, Gary joins DaddyO for an ayahuasca ceremony in which he and his ex-wife come to terms with their son’s passing.  In “Charles’ Story” Gary now is working as a performance therapist at a high-end rehab center in Malibu. In attendance is Charles, the mild mannered father of the girl Laura from Girl on a Bed. Using the art of performance, Gary guides Charles through a process of healing for the death of his daughter but the process is cut short by the wild fires raging through the hills of Malibu.
