Kemp Powers’ One Night in Miami… has now crossed the Atlantic. World Premiering in 2013 at Los Angeles’ Rogue Machine Theatre, the show moved eastward in 2015: first to Baltimore, then Denver. Now it moves even farther eastward, jumping the Atlantic to London’s Donmar Warehouse where the show runs October 6 through December 3, 2016.
Powers is a founding member of The Temblors, an Angeleno writers’ group. His highly lauded play concerns a meeting in 1964 between boxer Cassius Clay (soon to be Muhammad Ali), singer Sam Cooke, football great Jim Brown, and activist Malcolm X.
This is only the most recent example of a play birthed in an LA 99-seat theater that moved on to have a cultural impact both nationally and internationally.
