Los Angeles and Our Theatre

Los Angeles Theatre is a vast and talented community. Much of what is presented on LA stages is new, inspiring and worthy of recognition. As the members of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle gather to honor and recognize the theatre community, let us recognize that the critic is an important element of that community.  Aside from helping drive audiences to shows, critics offer a mirror to the artists. Critics are not just casual observers of the theatre, they are students and professionals of the stage. Their insights can and do affect shows. It is also these trained eyes that fully comprehend the effort exerted by the entire theatre community.

There is much about theatre that is magical.  Be it the opportunity to glimpse into alternate lives, the escape from reality or just the chance to revel in the bliss of collected talent, the reasons to celebrate theatre can be endless. It is the last of these though that is truly profound in nature. The collection of various talents, from writers and directors, to designers and performers, as well as the countless craftsmen that execute much of the vision that truly inspires awe. It is in this collection, the forming of a community, that real magic occurs.

Art by its very nature is an individual’s effort that flows from the very core of human experience. It is through the ego of each artist that that expression surfaces and then is cast forth for public consumption. It is the individual effort and the collaboration that follows that is celebrated by the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards.

Remember theatre is not a competitive sport; it is a collaboration of the efforts of all the artists involved. Revel in all that are honored, in all that are mentioned and in all that participate. Awards are not about the best, but about the outstanding. We celebrate the very art and all that it is and all that in can be. Though often it is the individual that is honored, it is the effort of all involved that allows for individual excellence.

It is the very collection and collaboration of artists that makes theatre so exciting. In a fashion, it is a microcosm of what all communities should be, individuals achieving self-fulfillment while focused on a common goal for a greater good.

FootLights, extends congratulations to the entire Theatre Community. Applaud the honored, respect the participants and support the effort of everyone involved,  in bringing entertainment, enlightenment and challenge to Los Angeles.
